April was a target rich environment, no doubt! Finding the murder hornets was great, and just in time for my arrival as a resident here. Now, if only they could find the nest where the California assembly reps go....

"There’s a bill in the state legislature with bipartisan support to ban passengers from using CLEAR". What ever happened to incentive? If I see someone getting through the line faster, dressing better, eating better, I have incentive to follow their lead and do it for myself. Society doesn't improve by pulling people down.

I love reading your reporting. With all of the doom and violence in the world (brought into my living room daily), I need your reporting to brighten my spirits and provide hope. How? Your stories show that there is a seemingly inexhaustible amount of stupid people in the world and with so many idiots running around, I rest assured that they will screw up any attempt at serious damage. Reducing it to inspired buffoonery!

As usual Jane your D&D missives make me laugh. However, you neglected to mention that Julie Su did such a bang up job when she neglected to look into or explain the unemployment debacle here in CA, that is costing us BILLIONS, she’s now the acting Secretary of Labor in Washington. You can’t make this s… up. Now, in my humble opinion, Gina Raimondo is someone to keep your eye on at Commerce. God I wish she’d think about running for president in 2028!

"Harry Crouch" 😅🤣😂 Your killing me saying that in your article with a straight face. Love your articles.

I agree with you on companies cooking the financial books with different methodology to look good with no consistent method. That is why it's best to just buy etfs or mutual funds like VOO. Less risk. Or just put your cash in 5% CDs and sleep well at night

Another great job.

"American women are still earning 84 cents for every dollar a man brings home. "

We all earn what we deserve. If we didn't, only a fool would stay in that job. You know that.

You get paid what you are worth to your employer. You know that.

Men work longer hours. More hours: more pay. You know that.

Men stay in the same job longer, earning pay raises. You know that.

Men create more businesses than women, paying themselves more for the risks involved. You know that.

Men are more flexible in the hours worked. Men do most of the swing and grave yard shifts. Those shifts usually pay extra. You know that

Men work in more dangerous jobs. More danger: more pay. You know that.

Men will do work that most women will refuse to do. You know that.

Most men do more physically demanding jobs that most women cannot do or refuse to do. You know that.

Most men by nature are more competitive then most women. They push to do more and to get ahead. You know that.

Men tend to go to jobs that pay more (Math, Engineering, etc.) While women tend to lower paying jobs (Theater Arts, counseling, etc.) You know that.

The above is true even in the same occupation/job title.

You know all this, yet you happily throw in your 84% figure.

You likely did a 3 second search, found this figure, and threw it in to fill space. And you probably even believe this figure, without knowing the facts. Which casts doubts on what you publish.

You can do better. You know that.

I agree with some of this, but certainly not all. But I think you’re missing the humorous point I was trying to make. Ladies Night harms men about as much as my Philosophy degree does. And letting me into the game for free will not create a sexual lure for any male fan, believe me (though my husband is ordered to say that it will).

Expand full comment
John Lo's avatar

I didn't miss the humor part. But why throw in the 84% part?

And what do you disagree with?

Expand full comment
Jane Wells's avatar

Well, just to start: “Men will do work that most women will refuse to do. You know that.” Women are constantly asked to take on menial endeavors that men refuse to do, because there’s no future advancement in it. I could go on, but the point is that it’s difficult to make apples to apples comparisons, especially when women choose to take time off to have children… and lose their place in line for advancement. In the end, it’s 84 cents. Let’s just agree to disagree on some of this.

Expand full comment
John Lo's avatar

The point is you have no valid facts to back up the 84%.

What 'menial endeavors' do men refuse to do? That..is your only point? And who forces anyone to stay in 'menial endeavors'?

Yes, women take time off for children. And? It is their choice.

Men were drafted into the military and killed and wounded. No chance for advancement. No choice there.

In the end... 84% is BS. Just another fake point.

Expand full comment
Jane Wells's avatar

Of course it is their choice. But at a cost. Also, we’ve had an all-volunteer military for decades. Women are now getting killed in combat, too! And they choose to join! https://janewells.substack.com/p/learn-to-say-no-to-extra-work-22-08-28

As a woman who chose sales as a career just so someone couldn't limit what I make and ultimately started my own business for the same reason. I would like to say John, you really don't understand. Some women stay at the lower pay because it's not any different anywhere else. Some stay because there is flexibility that they value. I certainly don't vilify all men. But the facts do speak for themselves: What is the wage gap currently?

Women earn an average of 16% less than men.[1]

For every dollar earned by men, women earned 84 cents.[1]

The controlled gender pay gap, which considers factors such as job title, experience, education, industry, job level and hours worked, is currently at 99 cents for every dollar men earn.[4] Forbes Advisor March 2024
